Faryal Makhdoom explains why she blasted her in-laws on social media

Legendary British-Pakistani boxing champ Amir Khan and his wife Faryal Makhdoom are making headlines these days for Makhdoom’s dynamite revelations about the treatment of her in-laws on her public Snapchat account. Ever since she spilled the beans on how she is mistreated by Amir Khan’s family, people have been showing her support as she touched a very sensitive topic of domestic violence and harassment from in-laws in Pakistani society.

The story unraveled a few days back when Makhdoom put up a series of Snapchat stories claiming how her in-laws attempted to hit her and also tried to force a divorce when she was nine-months pregnant with her baby. She claimed in those stories that her husband is also a victim of their bullying tactics.

After these revelations, many wondered what Khan’s stance is on the matter and if this move put a pressure on their relationship. Talking to the press about the fallout from these revelations, Makhdoom said that her and Khan are very much on the same team.

“I did it [spoke out on Snapchat] because there are so many Pakistani daughters-in-law who go through this and never speak up,” says Faryal. “I was one of them, who stayed quiet for my husband’s respect, for my family’s sake. I spoke up to make these women strong… I spoke up to defend my husband who’s done so much for his family but still gets grief, why? I wanted people to see this is unacceptable.”

When asked what Amir Khan thought of the whole situation, Makhdoom said that initially he didn’t believe her, but gradually he came to see that her grievances had a ground.

“At first it was the cultural thing of mom, dad, listen to everything they say. But in time Amir saw I was getting mistreated and it wasn’t fair to see your wife and child be put through this. Amir supports me in everything I do, we are one.”

Makhdoom further explained how she tried to peacefully co-exist with Khan’s family for three years, but failed at it despite her best attempts.

So far a statement from Amir Khan’s family has not surfaced and majority of the people have their sympathies with Faryal Makhdoom.
