A tragic incident took place on Thursday in Mardan when the police shot dead a man who failed to stop on the officers’ orders near the city’s judicial complex.
According to the details of the incident provided, the deceased, identified as Wolas Mir, was riding on his bicycle in an area which had been closed for the past two weeks. Mir had crossed a check-post near the judicial complex which had come under attack on Sept 2, 2016 by a suicide bomber. In that incident, 16 people were killed so when Mir defied orders, the officers became suspicious and knocked him over with an armored personnel carrier.
“He proceeded with his bicycle on the closed portion of the road ignoring the police directions to stop,” an officer said, adding that it forced the police to use force to stop him.
Despite getting hit, Mir got up and started running which prompted the officers to open fire on him. Mir received six shots to his chest and died on the spot.
After the incident, Mir’s family and friends came out in protest and blocked roads while chanting against the police. Mir’s brother-in-law, Absar Khan told the press that the deceased was a father of 12 children and was cloth merchant by profession. His hearing was impaired and he probably could not hear the order to stop.
He said that the Mardan police though registered an FIR after a public protest, it was too vague. “Instead of directly charging the cops who shot Mir dead, the police officers instead promised to hold an inquiry into the incident,” he said.
