President Donald Trump fires FBI Director James Comey

In a shocking move, US President Donald Trump fired the FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday, for his mishandling of Hillary Clinton email leak issue. The move comes at a time when Comey was leading FBI’s investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential campaign and possible collusion with Trump’s campaign.

According to Trump, the decision to fire Comey is solely based on the election year email scandal of then-Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, however, the Democrats were quick to immediately accuse Trump of having political motives behind this decision.

It has been reported that Trump made the decision based on the recommendation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions that the FBI Director could no longer provide effective leadership. Comey was supposed to lead the agency through September 2023.

Trump wrote a letter to Comey, which was released by the White House and it stated; “It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission.”

The Democrats have lashed out against Trump for firing Comey and have demanded an explanation into this decision.

“Today’s action by President Trump completely obliterates any semblance of an independent investigation into Russian efforts to influence our election, and places our nation on the verge of a constitutional crisis,” said Representative John Conyers, senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

The Democrats have also called for an independent commission or a special prosecutor to investigate Russian influence in the 2016 election.
