Candlelight vigils were held across the country for little Zainab with people holding placards with the hashtag #JusticeforZainab. The same hashtag is also trending on social media with plights from people from all genres of life, demanding justice for Zainab.

According to official reports, Zainab is the 12th child who was found raped and murdered in the city in within a two-kilometer radius in the last two years. The discovery of Zainab’s body sparked city-wide protests with enraged people setting fire to politicians’ homes, accusing authorities of inaction. As a result of the riots, two people were killed due to police firing on the crowds.

A spokesperson for the government of Punjab province said the suspect was likely “a lunatic with psychological disorders”.

“The perpetrator involved in the murder is a serial killer,” said Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan.
