Zardari can be forced to step down as President: Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman

Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief, Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman, believes that mounting pressure can force President, Asif Ali Zardari, to resign from his post.

Fazl fears a collision amongst the institutions, and has urged them to continue working under the constitutional orders. The situation of several institutions including PIA, Railways, and Wapda has deteriorated in the recent years,
and the President has already admitted to the crisis.

The JUI chief voiced his opinion for an early general election, and believes that it is a demand of everyone in the country. He confirmed that he has held talks with the opposition parties to step up the issue. The 58-year-old
revealed that he called Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chairman, Nawaz Sharif, to look into various issues including the interim government, voter’s list and setting up of an independent election commission.

While talking to the reporters, Fazl-ur-Rehman said,

“The government also appears to be in favour of holding early general elections and the opposition also demands it. So we have started contacting opposition parties to evolve consensus on the issue. We have sent a message to PML-N
chief Nawaz Sharif for and understanding on setting up an independent Election Commission and an interim government and preparing transparent voter lists. We are waiting for Mr Sharif’s reply.”

While talking to the party’s general meeting, Fazl has urged his workers to start preparing for the elections. He insisted that the current government has failed to deliver on its promises, and corruption has hit climax.

The JUI chief took swipe at Imran Khan’s slogans of a political Tsunami coming in the country. Fazl insisted that he does not believe in slogan politics, and Tsunami always brings destruction.

“We are hearing new slogans of a coming tsunami but we don’t believe in politics of sloganeering. A tsunami always brings destruction.”

Imran Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaaf has been the centre of media attention, as several big name politicians have joined the party recently.
