Leaders of opposition to work jointly to mount pressure on government for early elections

Islamabad: (Saturday, January 14, 2012) Leaders of the opposition parties in Parliament here yesterday have agreed to form a coalition to jointly exercise pressure on PPP-led government to hold early general elections as it had
not only lost the moral grounds to stay in power, but had miserably failed to address to the vows of the masses.

This resolve was expressed during a meeting with PML-Nawaz chief Nawaz Sharif who discussed a number of proposals with likeminded leaders to force the government for early polls.

The meeting, which lasted for over four hours, was attended by JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman along with Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Prof Khurshid Ahmad, Aftab Ahmad Khan Sherpao, Mahmood Khan Achakzai, Mir Hasil Bezinjo, Ameer Gohar
Ayub, Prof Sajid Mir and Shah Muhammad Shah.

During the meeting, the PML president was assisted by Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Raja Zafarul Haq, Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Ahsan Iqbal, Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Pir Sabir Shah.

Besides stressing the government for early elections, the agenda for the meeting also included of asking the government to hold an error-free computerized electoral polls with the help of Election Commission of Pakistan that must
complete the process of correcting the voting lists by the deadline set by Supreme Court.

For mounting pressure on the present ruling alliance, the meeting contemplated on three possible options, which included a no-trust motion against the government, a long march or street agitation or to resign from the parliament.
The meeting, however, ruled out the idea of forwarding a no-trust motion as it had little chances of success.

Opposing the idea of bringing in a no-confidence motion, Aftab Khan Sherpao was reported to have said, “When we know it will fail, what is the use of moving a no-trust motion. It will be an exercise in futility.” However, favouring
the idea, Qazi Hussain Ahmad maintained that doing so will put pressure on the government and will serve the purpose of discrediting it further before the masses.

In a rare development, all the participants of the meeting unanimously agreed on not to support an extra constitutional attempt to topple the government as it will harm democracy in the country beyond repair.
