US officials accuse Iran of supplying weapons to Syrian forces

The US Officials have accused Iran of supplying weapons to Syrian forces as an attempt to suppress people, who are protesting against President Assad.

The officials told AFP that Qasem Soleimani, Chief of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps was present in the Syrian capital, earlier this month. Washington believes that it is without a doubt the most solid proof of Iran’s military equipment supply to
Syria.

“We are confident that he was received at the highest levels of the Syrian government, including by President Assad. We think this relates to Iranian support for the Syrian government’s attempts to suppress its people,” the official told on term of obscurity.

He further told Washington thinks that Iran is providing security related hardware “including munitions” to Syrian forces.

“The US government believes Iran has supplied Syria with munitions,” he said.

The influential Soleimani has been revealed as a probable successor to Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Last year, Washington accused him of being involved in the assassination of Saudi ambassador to US, which was planned by Quds force. They believed that Quds force hired a Mexican drug union for $1.5 million to murder the ambassador.

Indications of direct collaboration between Iran’s Revolutionary Guards and Syria surfaced a week later, when Mahmud Suleiman Haj Hamad blamed Iran and Iraq for financially aiding the Syrian quell. Haj Hamad was a former official in Assad’s government.

According to an Al-Jazeera report, Hamad made these allegations in a press conference at Cairo.

Syria is Iran’s biggest ally in the region and it has been concerned about the projected fall down of Syria. It has blamed Israel and USA for inflaming trouble in Syria.

On Tuesday, Assad proclaimed through a broadcasted speech that he will end “terrorism” in the country and warned outcastes of their efforts to weaken the country.

On this issue, US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton explained the speech as “chilling”. Moreover, United States says that Assad lost his political authority long ago when he tried to coerce hopes of Syrians for freedom and democracy.
