Rehman Malik terms Shahbaz Sharif’s statement contempt of court

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik announced to move the apex court against Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, saying he had committed contempt of court by offering security to US-business tycoon, Mansoor Ijaz.

While speaking to the media on Friday, the minister also informed that he would file a petition for a ‘contempt of court’ notice against the chief minister.

On Thursday, Shahbaz Sharif extended his personal assurance to provide an invincible security cover to Mansoor Ijaz, the central character of infamous memogate scandal, asking him to arrive in the Punjab to record his statement.

The CM affirmed that he would welcome Mansoor Ijaz, providing him complete security till the last moment he will be in Pakistan. At the same time, he also offered the judicial commission probing the controversial memogate to come to the province to record Ijaz’s statements.

It is vital to mention here that Mansoor Ijaz has continually declined to visit Pakistan citing security reasons despite several assurances as the judicial commission summoned him time and again. Furthermore, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS), tasked to probe the issue, gave him a final deadline of February 10 to appear before the committee.

Shahbaz’s offer triggered a lot of criticism in the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) circles that is being hesitated in providing security to Mansoor Ijaz.

Rehman Malik was of the opinion that the judicial commission had constrained to issue statements over the matter and Shahbaz Sharif committed contempt of court by violating the instructions.

He asked the PML-N leaders to pay heed to issue of contaminated drugs that killed more than hundred people in Punjab, rather than interfering in the legal matters.

The minister further explained that the ‘cat is out of the bag’ now and that it was clear why PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif approached the court in the memogate issue.
