MQM to boycott President’s address to Parliament’s joint session

President Asif Ali Zardari will address the joint session of Parliament on March 17, 2012. Muttahid Quami Movement has decided to boycott the upcoming joint session of Parliament to protest against extortion in Karachi.

The decision was taken during by Rabita Committee of MQM during a meeting held in Karachi. The meeting was called to discuss the deteriorating security situation in the city due to rising extortion and street crimes.

Syed Haider Abbas Rizvi, a senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement leader had earlier claimed that the ongoing extortion incidents in the provincial capital could not be stopped by anyone else but the President of Pakistan, Mr. Asif Ali Zardari who is also co-chairman
of country’s ruling party.

Speaking to the media reporters outside the National Assembly, Haider Abbas Rizwi had earlier said that MQM spoke to every responsible person in the government, including Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, Interior Minister Rehman Malik, Chief Minister Sindh
Qaim Ali Shah and law enforcement agencies, but useless.

“They [extortionists] have held the people of Karachi hostage. Whoever wishes comes to Karachi and loots its citizens. I ask, how long will this go on for?”

“Go and check CPLC records… more than 60 children have been kidnapped for not fulfilling the demands of the extortionists,” he said.

All Private School Management Association has announced that schools will be closed tomorrow; however, no decision has yet been taken on government schools. Meanwhile, the management of the University of Karachi has announced that the university will remain
open tomorrow.
