Hail and farewell to those we lost in 2012 (Part One)

As the year comes to end, let’s not forget to pay tribute to the prominent people that made a difference with their contributions to the country.

Although they have passed on, they will always be remembered as the heroes of our country and the faces that have represented Pakistan all over the world. Here is the brief review of the some famous names who lost us in the previous year. In the first part of the article, we will put light on the personalities of Pir Sahib Pagara and Arfa Karim Randhawa.

Syed Shah Mardan Shah-II (1928 – 2012)

Syed Shah Mardan Shah-II widely known as Pir Pagara was the spiritual leader of Hurs and president of political party Pakistan Muslim League (F). He was commonly known in Pakistan as Pir Sahib Pagara. He was an influential figure in Pakistani politics and the leader of Hur Force in Pakistan who also participated in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965. He was also a first-class cricketer. He died on January 10, 2012 in London, UK due to liver infection.

Arfa Karim Randhawa (1995 – 2012) Computer Prodigy

Arfa was a Pakistani student and computer prodigy, who in 2004 at the age of nine years became Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), the youngest in the world. She was invited by Bill Gates to visit the Microsoft Headquarters in the USA. A science park in Lahore was named after her, the Arfa Software Technology Park.

As of 2011, she suffered from cardiac arrest after an epileptic seizure on December 22, 2011 and was admitted to Lahore’s Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in critical condition. On January 14, 2012, Arfa Karim passed away when she was only 16-years-old.

She was awarded Fatimah Jinnah Gold Medal in the field of Science and Technology in August 2005, presented by the Prime Minister of Pakistan.

She received Salaam Pakistan Youth Award in August 2005, presented by the President of Pakistan. Later, she was honored President’s Award for Pride of Performance.
