13 die as train crushes Rickshaw near Sheikhupura

At least 13 people were killed when a train crushed a passenger rickshaw near Sheikhupura on Saturday, official said.

The accident occurred as there was no crossing on the track.

Police and witnesses said that at least 20 people were travelling in the rickshaw when it was hit by the Karakuram Express train, killing 10 people at the scene, District Coordination Officer said. Three people died later in hospital, doctors said. Women and children were among the dead.

Eight other passengers in the rickshaw were injured and shifted to the local hospital. The people shifted the injured to hospital in private vehicles.

The Karakoram Express was on its way from Lahore to Karachi when it collided with the rickshaw.

An eyewitness said that the passengers in the rickshaw were travelling to a mazaar in the area to attend a mela and there were no gates on the railway crossing. 

Locals said there is no crossing at many crossing in the area which routinely lead to accidents. They say that the railways officials have not addressed to their concerns.
