Gov’t convenes APC on national security on Sept: 9

The government has convened the long-awaited All Parties Conference (APC) on September 9 to evolve a national security plan to deal with terrorism, officials said late Thursday.

Interior Minister Ch: Nisar Ali Khan has talked to senior political leaders by the phone and extended invitations to them, they said.

He delivered invitation to the leaders from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The conference will be held at the Prime Minister’s house.

The APC was delayed due to the absence of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan. He had also called for a closed-door meeting with the army chief and the prime minister before the APC.

Khan had stated the conference would be a futile exercise if it was held before fully knowing the underlying facts about the country’s involvement in the ongoing war on terror.

PTI announced that Imran Khan has accepted the invitation and will attend the conference.

The government was previously expected to hold the APC on July 12 to evolve a national strategy to curb militancy and address the overall law and order and security situation in the country.

The government says the APC will also discuss whether the gov’t should opt for talks with the Taliban.

Officials say the government “has been considering various steps to formulate a consensus policy regarding terrorism in the country since it has taken over in June.”

Rasheed said that comprehensive strategy would be adopted against the terrorist outfits. He added that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also ordered a briefing from the intelligence and security agencies concerned for a consolidated national security strategy.

The minister said that the government would utilise all resources to make Pakistan stronger and peaceful.
