A bomb blast in Karachi’s Gulshan-i-Hadeed area on Monday aimed at a Chinese engineer led to at least one person ending up with minor injuries.

Rao Anwar, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) stated that a pamphlet written in Sindhi and containing the name of a group called ‘Sindhudesh Revolutionary Party’ was discovered at the site of the blast. The pamphlet rejected, among other things, the “foreign control over Sindh’s natural resources”.

The pamphlet when translated, reads

“We consider China, rising as a global power, to be an ally of Pakistan, and also consider it an accomplice of the Punjabi Establishment in making Sindh slaves to loot its resources, and therefore we accept the responsibility of bomb attack on Chinese in Gulshan-i-Hadeed.”

It also stated,

“We want to make it clear to China that we will oppose every anti-Sindh project including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).”

The injured party was the driver for a Chinese engineer who stayed in the surrounding area and was traveling on the National Highway en route to Port Qasim from Gulshan-i-Hadeed without security.

Police secured the area and gathered evidence from the scene for further investigation. The improvised explosive device (IED) contained five hundred grams of explosives including nuts and bolts.

According to witnesses, a suspicious item was in the green belt of the road that exploded as the vehicle carrying the Chinese engineer passed by.

DIG East Zone, Dr Kamra Fazal claimed that the roadside bomb had been planted opposite Quaid-i-Azam Park along the National Highway.

Gulshan-i-Hadeed is a neighborhood in Karachi’s Bin Qasim Town located near Pakistan Steel Mills and accomodates its workers.

Numerous Chinese workers are presently working across Pakistan on different development projects including the CPEC and the Thar coal power project.

In August last year, a comprehensive security plan for Chinese nationals and professionals visiting Karachi and several other parts of the province for the CPEC-related projects was said to have been drafted by the Sindh police. Almost six months ago, with 111 Chinese projects, the Sindh police ensured security to more than 1,500 nationals.

One important aspect to protecting the corridor and paramount to Pakistan’s long-term prosperity is an army division which was founded in the past few months with an estimated number of 13,000 troops.

Qaim Ali Shah, Sindh Chief and Inspector General (IG) Sindh AD Khawaja noticed the incident and demanded an investigation.
