The rumours making rounds that Shah Mehmood Qureshi would be part of Pakistan Tehrik-e Insaaf finally proved right on Sunday when the former Pakistan People’s Party member announced to join the PTI in the largely attended rally at Ghotki.

Also addressed by Imran Khan whose presence brought a lot of his supporters in Ghotki bordering Sindh and Punjab, the rally saw fiery speeches by both the leaders. Qureshi, who constitutes powerful influence in the region and inspires respect due to his
pedigree, scathingly criticized his former leader, President Asif Ali Zardari.

Echoing what Imran Khan says with astounding confidence, Qureshi said the “winds of change have now begun” and then announced that he was joining the PTI: “I announce I am joining a movement, which is struggling to win justice for people.”

The thunderous applause that ensued the announcement, Shah Mehmood Qureshi said he was embarking on a new journey from today onwards with Imran Khan’s team. Qureshi’s speech was significant in that it had a lot of cultural and religious symbolism in
it, meant to galvanize his followers who hold immense respect for him.

While rhetoric was an indispensable part of the speech, something that was reliably predicted by the observers, Qureshi severely criticized the federal government, saying they’d indulged in loot and plunder and that the time had come to seek a fresh mandate
from the people.

Qureshi said his journey started when he refused to “sell Pakistani blood” in the Raymond Davis issue. It was a decision that won him media laurels for a period of time until Shah Mehmood Qureshi disappeared and re-appeared once again.

Imran Khan who also addressed the rally, whose party does not have any seat in the National or any Provincial assemblies, reminded the government that “tsunami which has reached Sindh will reach Karachi on December 25, and then I will teach people how to
drop two wickets with one ball.”

The allusion to dropping two wickets with one ball was aimed at the opposition leader in National Assembly Chauhdry Nisar Ali Khan who regularly accuses Imran Khan of being an establishment man, and mocks him by saying ‘politics is no cricket’.
