Islamabad: The US Ambassador in Pakistan, Cameron Munter, while talking in a talk show at a private TV channel today said that Pakistan should get beyond anger and should put in its part of efforts to mend ties with America.
Responding to a question, the Ambassador said that the NATO attack on Pakistan army’s post in Mohmand Agency was a terrible accident but it was unintentional. He termed failure of mechanism responsible for the mishap.
Responding to the queries of the anchor, Munter said that their feelings on the tragic incident were no different from that of Pakistani people and they had ordered for a detailed inquiry into the matter. He said, “We feel as Pakistani
people do on this terrible tragedy. It should not have happened. We have pledged a full inquiry into the incident and we should learn from this so that it should never happen again”.
When asked to comment on Prime Minister Gilani’s statement in which he had talked about a possible closure of Pakistani airspace for American planes, the US ambassador in Islamabad said that the fact that Pakistan and the US were
on the same side must not be forgotten. He asserted that both the allies should have more talks rather than less and it was time to get beyond the anger.
Answering to a question regarding whether US government was pressurizing its Pakistani counterpart to restore the NATO supply, Munter said that officials from both the sides were engaged into talks and were discussing all issues
concerning relations of the two countries. However, he avoided giving a clear answer to the question.
After the tragic incident which left about 2 dozen Pakistan soldiers martyred, the US is insisting Pakistan to take the incident with a cool mind, while the fact of the matter is that had there been any other country instead of
Pakistan, the US could have paid a heavy price for embarking on its ally and than trying to play innocent.
Presently, although government and army’s stand over the issue represents the common people’s feelings, however, it is still feared that any or both of them can still have some under the table dealing with the US over projecting
a mild stance on an issue which seriously left the country’s integrity and security violated.
