Information Minister Firdaus Ashiq Awan rejects the impression to join PTI

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr. Firdaus Ashiq Awan Thursday denied the reports that she was joining the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying she will live and die in the PPP.

“I have to live and die in the Pakistan People’s Party and such rumors carry no weight.” she told media after inaugurating Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) Complaints Call Center.

She said that those who were joining PTI leaving their mother parties will have no honor after some time. The minister said that she would not do what Shah Mehmood Qureshi did. Firdaus repeated "once who leaves the Peoples Party is humiliated in the World
and thenceforth”.

The minister asserted that the government will complete its five-year constitutional and democratic term mandated by the masses. In her view, the next general polls will be held in 2013 for smooth transition of powers.

Firdaus went on to say that the ministry and any other portfolio are meaningless to her, adding that she will prefer to quit the posts if she failed to deliver. She affirmed that she wanted to purify the entire system not a single person.

Replying to a query about the strength of Imran Khan Karachi’s rally and Naudero’s gathering, the information minister stated public gathering at Garhi Khuda Bux in connection with fourth martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto cannot be
compared with other gatherings.

“We had gathered at mausoleum of Benazir Bhutto to pay her homage rather for political reasons,” she clarified.

She further told media that the regulatory authority had been given mandate to enhance the standard of information, education and entertainment, ensuring more choices for viewers in news, current affairs and other programs.

Dr. Firdaus Ashiq Awan informed that the incumbent government had also established Councils of Complaints at four provincial metropolises as well headquarter in the federal capital comprising eminent officials to redress public complaints.

“We want to introduce self-accountability at the channels by introducing this medium,” she maintained.

Considering the current scenario, she opined that the government was also planning to introduce National Digitalization Policy (NDP) by next year. In her view, the NDP will enhance the quality and capacity of TV channels.
