Rockets fired at Pakistan Military Academy

In the fresh move of terrorist, unidentified attackers have fired nine rocket propelled grenades at the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA) Kakul near Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, causing damage but no casualties.

DCO Abottabad Imtiaz Hussain Shah confirmed the attack saying, “Nine rockets were fired. Three rockets hit the boundary wall of the military academy and damaged it. No one was hurt in the attack.”

He further stated, “We have launched a search operation. The six other rockets landed in open fields near the outer wall.” It was not immediately clear who was responsible for the attack.

Fortunately no one was injured in the pre-dawn strike in the first attack on Pakistan’s top military academy that is only 30 miles (50 kilometres) far away from the capital, Islamabad.

The DCO further informed the media that police had recovered nine rocket-launching pads behind a mosque, about 500 metres from the academy. He was quoted saying, “We have a security system and checkpoints on the roads, but the place they used as a launch pad is accessible from all sides and there are mountains at the back of this place.”

In his view, at this stage they couldn’t comment who was involved, but they were terrorists and they are investigating how they managed to reach this place.

Another official, Mohammad Karim Khan, Abbottabad police chief, confirmed the attack. “Three rockets hit the boundary wall. Three others landed in an open area and three others landed in a field,” he added.

It is vital to mention here that Pakistan army chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani visited Abbottabad on Thursday to attend an officers’ conference, according to a statement from the military’s media unit.

It was the first attack in the normally peaceful northwest city since U.S. Navy Seals killed Osama bin Laden during a raid on his compound last May 2, 2011.
