The economic crisis in Europe affected at all levels of consumption in the continent, including mobile telephony. The handset sales in 2011 registered its first significant drop since the start of the recession, a decline in sales of 10% over the previous year. But the proportion of so-called smartphones or high-end phones increased by 30%, according to data from Ametic, employers in the sector.

The mobile handset sales in Spain were 20 million, 10% less than the same period last year. Total market, 9.8 million were smartphones, 49% of the total compared to 31% in 2010. The existing fleet of smartphones is estimated at 18 million units, an increase of 30% compared to even the year before.

In this sense, smartphone is the global trend because the volume of global sales of mobile handsets reached 488 million, of which 63% were smarties.

Ametic notes that these data reflect the behaviour experienced in Spain in 2011, marked by the economic crisis and the beginning of the decline in mobile operator subsidies on the purchase of a new handset. It is also believed that last year the market was influenced by the emergence of new devices such as tablets and tablet cum phones (hybrids between tablets and phones) whose evolution will begin to be representative from this exercise.

For the president of Ametic, Jesus Banegas, “the fall of the mobile handset market in Spain, in this case, with a level of turnover in Europe is the highest, although it fell to 37%, as compared to 40% of from last year with fifth position in the EU.” Therefore, Banegas adds that “Spain is enjoying one of the most advanced mobile world.”

At the end of 2011, Spain had a total of 51.6 million mobile lines, of which 31.5 million were associated with contracts and 20.1 million prepaid. In addition, 89% of homeowners had a mobile phone and 11% more than one.
