Sony goes universal with its new mobile gaming console PlayStation Vita, originally released in Japan last December. Sony has a renowned and critically acclaimed reputation in video gaming and its PlayStation 3 is one of the advanced consoles available in the market.

Sony is one of the handfuls who offer handheld gaming consoles but its PlayStation Portable or PSP competed with tabletop consoles in full strength and now the company has released its successor that is even more than a gaming device.

The PlayStation Vita or PSVita emerged on the horizon with more than just gaming. It incorporates a capacitive touch screen, with has become a norm in today’s mobile technology. However, along with a touch screen are a number of other features that might just kill the competition between Sony and whatnots in the market.

The PlayStation Vita surely uplifts the ancestry of portable gaming and the pedigree of PSP but the additional features make it a universal device.

First off, the specifications of the device, which are not only high-tech as compared to its foes in the market but also hefty as compared to price with which it entertains the market.

Sony has built the PSV around a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore processor that can not only play PSV-oriented games but is capable of running PC-DVDROM and Mac-based games as well. However, here is the downside to the new device. Sony has been quite sensitive about copyrights of late and their experience with PSP has not been very thriving. The concept of copyrights was left in tatters with PSP.

The PlayStation Vita retails for $250 (Wi-Fi only) and $300 (Wi-Fi /3G). At a quick glance, it could be confused with the PSP, but upon further inspection you’ll find its wider, taller, and just a few millimetres thicker and few ounces heavier than the PSP-3000. Most noticeable of all, though, has got to be its dazzling 5-inch (960×544-pixel) OLED touch screen, which is nearly an entire inch bigger (diagonally) than the PSP-3000’s screen.
