Legal fraternity observed strike against desecration of Holy Quran

The legal fraternity of twin cities observed strike, boycotting the court proceedings against desecration of Holy Quran by US-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops in Afghanistan.

Earlier, Punjab Bar Council (PBC) on Sunday had appealed to all bar associations in Punjab to boycott courts and hoist black flags on rooftops of bar rooms.

Responding to the PBC’s appeal, the Islamabad High Court Bar Association, Islamabad District Bar Association and Rawalpindi District Bar Association also decided to join the protest.

Lawyers in the twin cities boycotted the proceedings of the Islamabad High Court (IHC), Lahore High Court Rawalpindi Bench and all the lower courts.

The lawyers hoisted black flags on the rooftop of their bar rooms and respective courts’ buildings while they also wore black ribbons around arms. The judges heard important cases in their chambers. Hearing of the cases could not be held due to Lawyers’ strike.

The organizations of the legal fraternities also passed unanimous resolutions to condemn the incident. They also demanded of the government to raise the issue in the United Nation (UN) as ISAF troops had humiliated the Muslims of the whole World by burning their Holy Book.

Protests had erupted in Afghanistan over reports that the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) troops had burnt copies of Holy Book along with other religious material, at the Bagram base in Afghanistan.

Twenty-five people including two American soldiers have been killed so far in Afghanistan during six days of violent protest against the incident, which is still continued despite the US Government and ISAF had apologised for the desecration of Holy Quran.

US President Barack Obama has apologised to the Afghan people for the burning of Quran by American troops at a US base. In a letter to President Hamid Karzai, Obama expressed his deep regret, saying the incident earlier this week was a genuine mistake.

Demonstrations against the desecration have continued for a third day across northern and eastern Afghanistan.

In the meantime, German forces in northern Afghanistan have withdrawn early from a base in Taluqan because of anti-US unrest over the burning of Qurans.

Around 50 German soldiers pulled out of the base on Thursday after about 300 people had demonstrated peacefully outside it, the spokesman said.
