3 Games that make a gamer – Part 1: Half-Life

In the first part of the series we take a look at a game where the player’s actions speak louder than his words, literally, because the in-game character does not speak.

There are certain games that come along every so often and redefine their genre. Then, there are other games that come along and define a generation of gamers.

Yet very rarely has a game come out and had as profound an effect on the gaming world as Valve’s Half-Life. The game was released over a decade ago and still remains relevant and regularly played by many to this day.

The game has inspired a number of mods, the most popular of which is Counter-Strike, the first-person shooter multiplayer game that no true gamer has not played.

As for Half-Life, well its multiplayer itself is not bad but its single-player is a definition of epic. It places you, the player, in role of a talent MIT graduate by the name of Gordon Freeman, who works at Black Mesa.

His job is to wear a HAZMAT suit and carry out experiments, like all scientist do in the video game world. Only, he becomes a one man army against the Government and an entire race of alien species when one of the experiments goes wrong.

The game has platform, puzzle solving and all out action segments and the story is told through a number of non-playable characters that the player meets along his way to saving the world and himself.

The government sends in the army and later on a Black Ops team to remove any and all evidence of the research facility, which Mr. Freemen fights off before jumping through a portal and taking on the aliens on their own planet.

It may sound like a bit of a cliché, yet it ought to be remembered that this is the game that came before everyone else tried to duplicate the concept.

If anyone has not played this game then after slapping themselves they should do so. It is a game worth experiencing, especially with Valve working on the third instalment of the series.
