Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto: A Man for the Ages

There have been very few people in history who have managed to be as or even more popular than the founding fathers of their country and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto was certainly one of those who forever changed the history of his nation, Pakistan.

Pakistan was truly blessed to have a leader like Bhutto. Charisma, talent, emotion and ability was what made Zulfiqar Bhutto the all-in-one package and led his name to be remembered by generation after generation and still very much alive today.

The common man would relate with Bhutto and vice-versa. Labourers and the actual working class were given the opportunities to actually move up in society and were treated like one, which is the reason why that the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has the biggest
vote bank in the country’s rural areas.

It was on this day, April 4, 1979, that Pakistan lost Bhutto to a judicial murder by being sentenced to be hanged till death at the hands of a martial law dictator, who could also be known as a coward.

Zia-ul-Haq, the appointee of Bhutto as the country’s chief of army staff, pointed the gun to his own commander-in-chief but not face-to-face, behind the curtains due to his inability to do so otherwise.

Great individuals are known by how they are remembered by the people they serve and there is barely any other example that could be matched to the Bhutto’s. People today still shout the slogan of “Jeay Bhutto (Long Live Bhutto)” and use it to express the
living of not only a martyr but also the ongoing Bhutto philosophy that gave this country what it needed most, the atomic bomb despite huge external pressure.

If Bhutto was still alive and the army actually played its constitutional role in keeping this country intact, than Pakistan would most definitely be a superpower and major player in international politics today.

The fact remains that Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Pakistan’s first democratically elected Prime Minister, is not with us today, but like millions of Pakistanis say, Jeay Bhutto!
