Imran Khan condemns PCNS’s resolution on NATO supply routes

The chairman and leader of the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf party made a statement on Friday in which he criticised the decision made by the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS) on the reopening of the NATO supply routes through Pakistan.

Citing this as yet another example of the muq muqa politics practiced by Maulana Fazlur Rehman and the PML N, he asked “what benefit will this resolution be to the people of Pakistan who have seen over 40,000 of their fellow citizens dead in this US-led
‘war on terror’as well as faced the loss of $50b in the last four years and seen FDI dry up?” Imran Khan also demanded to know what had happened to the principle of “give peace a chance” which was the central part of the APC Resolution passed unanimously by
all the mainstream political parties of the country.

He reiterated that this new resolution was merely a continuation of making the Pakistani state play a mercenary role for the US and only the price for this had been jacked up. However the money that would come would go into the hands of a few and would be
of no benefit to the country. In fact, Khan pointed out, it would cause more harm with an increase in terrorism again, more militancy, greater polarization within the country and more economic destabilization.

PTI would not accept any restoration of NATO supply routes through the country as any supply going to NATO forces keeps the war prolonged as it supports the war effort. It is not simply a matter of money. It is a matter of extricating Pakistan from this
war which is not Pakistan’s war at all and which has aggravated terrorism in Pakistan.

Members of Parliament have approved a list of 14 proposals aimed at revamping relations with the United States. This list includes a ban on American drone strikes or any other incursion into Pakistani territory. And, it would bar arms or munitions from NATO
convoys that carry supplies through Pakistan for Western forces in Afghanistan.

Khan concluded by regretting how Parliament was being made to legitimize the Musharraf era debilitating Pakistan-US relationship rather than seeking to actually restructure the nature of the relationship rather than a few micro level adjustments while the
overall structure remains unaltered.
