Ukrainian developer GSC Game World has been shut down and thus the sequel of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has been scrapped to make way for new projects.

The company made the announcement regarding the fate of the studio and its popular shooter game on Wednesday, April 25.

The company explained that the decision to shut down the GSC Game World was taken due to the scarcity of funds.

Reports of turbulent waters existing in the company began to circulate after the founder and GSC Game World founder Sergei Grigorovich considered to shut the studio down. Work had already started on the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, though its future was put in jeopardy after Grigorovich’s decision.

This was having a huge impact on the development team that had been working on the sequel of the shooter without salaries since December 2011.

Even though the company later revealed that work had resumed on the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.’s sequel, it was soon reported that the company was facing yet another financial crisis.

The new investors and rights owners of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. failed to come to an agreement, which eventually led to scrapping of the project.

GSC Game World inked a deal with Vostok Ventures Ltd. to lose its previous identity and become Vostok Games. The studio is also based in Ukraine and already become operational.

One of the first games that the new studio has started to work on is Survarium, a free-to-play massively multiplayer online first-person shooter. The game is expected to help the new studio gain recognition by attracting gamers through the offer of an experience that is similar to that of Counter Strike.

While the new studio has much planned, the fans of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. are not too happy. Intense discussions and suggestions were being made on forums as to what improvements would be seen in the sequel, which in turn was creating a lot of hype. With the developers forced to pull the plug, the fans not only feel disappointed but also betrayed.

GSC Game World cannot be blamed for letting the fans down as they had no viable option at hand to combat the financial crisis that they had fallen in.
