Miguel Cotto: Floyd Mayweather is not invincible

Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012 12:59:16 by

Miguel Cotto, the reigning WBA (Super) Light Middleweight Champion, is all set to take on the five-division world champion and the current WBC Welterweight Champion, Floyd Mayweather junior, on May 5 at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas, Nevada and he is fully confident of a win over the undefeated American legend.

Mayweather, now 35, holds an unbeaten record of winning all of his 42 professional fights, with 26 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout but Cotto is completely unnerved with Mayweather’s incredible record, as he believes no one is invincible.

The Puerto Rican pugilist has a record of winning 37 of his 39 professional fights, including 30 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout. He tasted defeat for the first time back in 2008 against Antonio Margarito. Therefore, he feels at the end it all comes down to one’s performance in the ring on the very night.

“No one is invincible,” said the 31-year-old. “I know this because I passed this moment in my own life when I was defeated for the first time [against Antonio Margarito in July 2008]. I am ready for anything Floyd brings to me. It is more important to ask if he is ready for anything Miguel brings to him.”

Cotto claims that he has everything which can cause Mayweather trouble in the ring but the Golden Boy, Oscar De La Hoya, who is staging the contest via Golden Boy Promotions, reckons the four-time world champion must change his aggressive and hard-hitting style against Mayweather.

He said: “Miguel Cotto doesn’t like a fighter to put a lot of pressure on him. It makes him box. It takes him out of his comfort zone. But at the same time Floyd Mayweather doesn’t like a fighter to be more patient than him. So if Cotto can have the same mentality it can cause some problems for Mayweather.”

Well, all said and done, there is not much time left in the fight so let’s see if Miguel Cotto can really shrug off the man who is considered as the best fighter on the planet.
