Alberto Contador’s return confirmed with Team Saxo Bank

The 2012 season witnessed a number of mindboggling moments, but the biggest of them all was the suspension of Alberto Contador.

The Spaniard was suspended by CAS for using performance enhancing drug, clenbuterol during the Tour de France 2010.

Contador faced a two-year ban and has also been stripped-off from all the victories since the 2010 edition of the French Grand Tour.

The cyclist is due to return to peloton on August 5th and has now announced that he will ride with his old side, Team Saxo Bank to continue the remaining part of the season.

Team Saxo Bank General Manager Bjarne Riis confirmed the news today, “A lot of speculation and rumour have surrounded Alberto Contador and his future in the past months”.

“But both our sponsors, the team and Alberto have shared the same wish to continue and build on our relationship”.

“All along throughout these last two tough years we have stood by Alberto, so to be able to announce his return to the team is something I have been really looking forward to”.

“Now we can put an end to these speculations and start focusing on building the team for the coming years,” he concluded.

It was rumoured that Contador is most likely to join Team Omega Pharma-QuickStep and Team Astana to continue his professional pursuit.

Alberto has briefed that signing up with Team Saxo Bank was not really a difficult pick and riding with the Danish side has always been his first priority.

He noted that Team Saxo Bank has always supported him in the good and the bad phases of his career.

The 29-year-started riding professionally with Team ONCE-Eroski in 2003 and stayed with the team by the end of 2007.

He also represented Team Discovery Channel (2007) and Team Astana (2008-10) before joining hands with the Danish outfit.

Contador’s journey with Team Saxo Bank started in 2011 and the cyclist is continuing his second consecutive season with the Danish side.

He holds as many as eight Grand Tour appearances under his belt and has occupied the top podium spot on four occasions after the disqualification.

Alberto will now be seen in action at the Exergy Tour and is most likely to ride the Vuelta a Espana 2012.
