No final decision made on NATO supply: Foreign Office

Islamabad: (Monday, July 02, 2012) Pakistan Foreign Office spokesman Muazzam Khan said here today that a final decision regarding resumption of NATO supply routes to Afghanistan is yet to be made. Talking to the journalists, Khan
said that talks between US and Pakistan are going on to resolve the issue amicably.

In order to pace up its efforts to convince Pakistan to resume the Nato supplies, ISAF commander General John Allen is in Pakistan for second time within a span of seven days. During his visit, Allen held meetings with civil and
military leadership of Pakistan.

Following an airstrike by US commandos at Salala check post back in November last year, that rendered 24 Pakistani soldiers martyred, Pakistan had blocked the NATO supply route. Moreover, the US had also refused to offer a former
apology to resolve the issue amicably.

Since then, Pakistan has been demanding a formal apology over the incident to salvage its respect and sovereignty before opening up the NATO supply routes.

During General Allen’s visit to Pakistan, he also called on Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar, however, no major agreement could be reached over the issue at hand.

According to sources, the US is willing to offer a formal apology for the Salala attack, however, the apology is expected to be made by the civilian leadership and not by the military officials who were involved in the incident.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Defence Committee is also expected to convene and discuss the matter at length in next few days where Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US Sherry Rehman will give a briefing to the participants.
