Connected Car: The concept is taking root in sedans, hatchbacks and now trucks – Part 2

2012 Ford Fiesta

Ford, being the trend setter for the concept of connected cars, has evolved to greater lengths. It started by connecting the smartphones with fast internet access to the cabin’s computer system. It played music from internet radios via Pandora. However, that has now extended to navigation controls inside the car that take the feeds from the smartphones. It has its own voice recognition system that searches contacts and media files from handsets. In short, its Sync AppLink has evolved to connect virtually everything that the phone has.

With Google Maps or the system’s own navigation system, the driver can reach the destination by connecting with the internet through the phone. It can assist the driver in searching for the favourite places by searching on Google.

2012 Audi A6

The German brand took a stab at the concept with another approach. In Audi A6, A7 and A8 the owner needs not attached the smartphone to the car. Audis have their own 3G connectivity options with a SIM card. The in-built operating system serves the applications like Google Earth to assist in navigation, special version of Wikipedia to search for favourite places, internet radios, video services and social services, et cetera.

However, it can still connect the smartphones to the system for playing music and making calls. The voice recognition system obeys command ordered by the driver.

2012 BMW 328i

Another German carmaker has probed into this idea of connecting people to the web on the go. Being a leading brand in the automobile industry, it leaves BMW a thin margin to ignore the new tech inside the cabin.
