Neil Armstrong, the true American hero, died on Saturday

The first man to walk the surface of the moon and a true American hero, Neil Alden Armstrong passed away on Saturday, August 25, 2012 due to complications from cardiovascular surgery. He was 82 and was suffering from cardiac ailment for some time.

Armstrong was the first man to engrave his foot in the moon soil for the first time in the history of mankind. He was also the pilot of module that landed on the surface of the satellite.

“We are heartbroken to share the news that Neil Armstrong has passed away,” his family said in a statement. “Neil was our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.

“He remained an advocate of aviation and exploration throughout his life and never lost his boyhood wonder of these pursuits.”

Though the astronaut was a reluctant person, his bravery and valour on far astronomic fronts and the triumph of celestial object for human kind was regarded for the rest of his life. He received decorations and accolades from 17 countries.

The mesmerizing live footages and Armstrong’s voice was watched and heard by over a billion people around the world on black-and-white televisions. His words “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” became synonymous to hardships and ultimate ventures by men.

He was accompanied by Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin on the moon surface. Aldrin collected 47 pounds of the moon surface and rocks and joined the module to the command module orbiting the moon, piloted by Michael Collins.

“Whenever I look at the moon it reminds me of the moment over four decades ago when I realized that even though we were farther away from Earth than two humans had ever been, we were not alone,” Aldrin said in a statement. “Virtually the entire world took that memorable journey with us.”

Armstrong left NASA shortly after the Apollo 11 mission and started his own business in Ohio shortly afterwards.
