Top seeds cruises into the second round at the US Open (Part Two: Men’s Draw) – Tennis News

Almost all seeds advanced in the opening day of action at the US Open 2012, a major hard court event taking place at Flushing Meadows in Queens, New York City.

The 17-time Grand Slam Champion, Roger Federer proved his class at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He toppled the local contender, Donald Young, in straight sets in 94 minutes.

"I thought it was good, considering I played a very talented player who I didn’t know much, I haven’t played against him," said the jubilant Swiss in a courtside interview after clinching the match.

Federer hammered 27 winners and broke his opponent’s serve five times to triumph over the American.

The top seed will face off Germany’s Bjorn Phau in the round of 64.

Seeded third in the tournament, Andy Murray from Britain also stole the show later that day.

"Only lost seven games in three sets, so I must have done something well today," reflected the 25-year-old in a post match press conference. "I played fairly well from the back of the court. I just would have liked to have served a bit better because I wasn’t
getting many free points on my serve. Because of that, there were a lot more rallies. When he’s in a rhythm, he’s tough to break down."

The Olympics gold medallist, Murray needed two hours and 15 minutes to crush Russia’s Alex Bogomolov Jr. with a breadstick.

The 22nd seed Florian Mayer was retired during his match against the 19-year-old, Jack Sock. He was trailing 3-6, 3-6, 2-3 when he was forced to withdraw due to an injury he sustained during the battle.

Kei Nishikori, Asia’s number one player, will join the top seed in the second round. He trashed Argentina’s Guido Andreozzi with a breadstick to advance.
