Former world number one Andy Roddick cruises into round two – US Open 2012

American icon, Andy Roddick, displayed brilliant skills to outsmart his qualifying compatriot, Rhyne Williams, at the US Open, their home Grand Slam event. He notched up a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory against the world number 289 to secure a spot in the second
round at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center on Tuesday.

Seeded 20th in this event, Roddick re-ignited his old spark and stomped over Williams in their first encounter. He needed one hour and 58 minutes to progress into the round of 64 at this final Grand Slam event held in Queens.

"There is no ‘acceptable result’," said the jubilant Roddick in an on-court interview after earning the glory. "You play your second round, try to win your second round. You go as far as you want. Or as far as you can. I don’t think we think of it in the
context of what’s acceptable and what’s not. You play a match to try and win a match."

The 29-year-old smashed 20 aces and clobbered a better first serve share of 73 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 62 per cent and impressively marked 58 out of 79 points on it. He brushed off both breakpoints he came across but cashed in three out of seven
break chances to prevail.

Next in queue for Roddick is the Australian number one, Bernard Tomic, who hit back to outrun Argentina’s Carlos Berlocq in four sets to set up this meeting. The Aussie teenager made a dismal start but stayed focused to carve out a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory
against Berlocq.

Seeded 11th in this event, Nicolas Almagro from Spain, also stole the show later that day. He tumbled the Czech star, Radek Stepanek, in marathon four sets to progress.
