Osama Commission submits inquiry report to Prime Minister

A Commission, tasked to investigate the U.S. raid to kill Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in May, 2011 and his presence, was submitted to the Prime Minister on Thursday, the Prime Minister office said.

The ‘Abbottabad Commission’, headed by a former Supreme Court judge, was formed two weeks after the U.S. Navy SEALS killed the al-Qaeda chief to probe the U.S. raid and Osama’s presence in Pakistan.

The five-member Commission had interviewed widows of the slain al-Qaeda chief, senior military, air force, intelligence officials, top government functionaries and residents of Abbottabad, where Osama was believed to have lived for five years.

“Chairman Abbottabad Commission Justice (R) Javed Iqbal called on Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf at the Prime Minister’s House this afternoon and submitted the report of the Commission,” a statement from the PM office said.

During the meeting, Justice (R) Javed Iqbal briefed the prime Minister on the salient features of the report prepared by the Commission, it said.

The Prime Minister appreciated the efforts and hard work of the Chairman and his team in the compilation of this report, the statement said.

The statement did not say about the contents of the report and it is still unclear whether or not the government makes the report public.

Head of the commission had previously stated that he would propose to the government to make the report public so the people should know the mystery behind the presence of the world’s most wanted man in Pakistan and the U.S. military operation.

Section of the local and foreign had, on a number of occasions, speculated about the Commission’s report but all reports had always been denied.

The Law and Justice Division had stated in September, 2012 that the Abbottabad Commission will l complete the inquiry and submit its report to the Federal Government within thirty days but it was submitted to the Prime Minister two-and-half of its deadline.

The Abbottabad commission was assigned with ascertaining the full fact regarding the presence of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan; investigating circumstances and facts regarding the U.S. operation in Abbottabad on May 2, 2011; determining the nature, background and causes of lapses of authorities concerned; and making consequential recommendations.
