American number one Serena Williams and the world number one Victoria Azarenka displayed flawless tennis to outclass their opponents and progressed into the second round at the Australian Open 2013, first of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Melbourne, Australia.

Seeded third in this event, Williams went on a 12-game killing spree, eventually slaughtering the Romanian challenger, Edina Gallovits-Hall, with double bagels in less than an hour.

The American icon was quoted in an on-court interview after cruising past her rival, “I haven’t had enough time to assess it yet. I saw the doctor again – we’re just going to see how it is in a few hours from now. But I’ll be out there on Thursday – I mean, unless something fatal happens to me – there’s no way I’m not going to be out there competing. I’m alive. My heart’s beating. I’ll be fine.”

Williams will next take on Spain’s Garbine Muguruza who bounced back to overpower the Russian contestant, Magdalena Rybarikova, to reach this spot.

The top seed, Azarenka, on the other hand also crippled her Romanian opponent, Monica Niculescu, in straight sets to progress. She notched up a 6-1, 6-4 victory in almost one and a half hour to outfox her opponent.

The Belarusian topped ranked star was quoted after winning the match:

“Her game is definitely unusual, but I’ve known her since we played Under 14s, and she actually played a lot more spin back then – it was all slice from both sides before. She’s unusual and tries to make you feel a little bit miserable on the court… So it’s important to just keep your focus and execute your shots.”

Next in queue for Azarenka is the Greek challenger, Eleni Daniilidou, in the second round.
