Gov’t misses assemblies’ dissolution, polls dates agreed with Qadri

The government has failed to announce dates for assemblies and parliamentary elections in a timeframe agreed with Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri.

A government negotiation team and Chief of Pakistan Awami Tahreek, Dr Qadri, had agreed to announce the dates of dissolution of national and provincial assemblies and date for general elections during seven to 10 days on January 27.

Qadri and Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira had announced decisions of their talks at a joint press briefing in Lahore.

The announcement was published as lead stories by almost all national dailies and was a breaking news on TV channels. However neither Qadri nor the PPP-led ruling coalition noticed as the timing they had set for dates announcement passed on Tuesday.

Some veteran PPP leaders had been critical at the government’s hobnobbing with Qadri, whose sudden return, long-march and sit-in had been viewed with suspicion and even a move to derail the election process.

Senior PPP leader like Senator Raza Rabbani, had described Qadri’s demands as unconstitutional but even then the government and its allies struck a deal with him in his bullet-proof container last month.

Many parties were critical at Qadri’s campaign as parliamentary elections are to be held in few months and everything is clear in the constitution and there is no need of any new experience. The gov’t and the main opposition will consult each other on the caretaker Prime Minister and there is also no need to make these agreed matters controversial.

Qadri’s call for dissolution of the Election Commission had been under fire by almost every part minus-PML-Q, the party created by military President Pervez Musharraf after he dismissed democratically elected government of Nawaz Sharif in 1999.

PML-Q has made calls for dissolution of the Election Commission after it faced humiliating defeat in by-elections in Punjab. The party did not approach the election tribunals with proofs to substantiate claims about polls fraud.

Many leaders is the country are advising Qadri to register his party with the Election Commission and take part in the polls with his ‘revolutionary’ slogans.

There are no two-opinion about Qadri’s slogans to end corruption and clean people reach the assemblies. However, the best way to seek support of the people is elections and he should avail the opportunity.
