Stewart Downing believes overpowering Spurs was Liverpool’s best win of the season – Football News

Winger Stewart Downing believes that outclassing Tottenham Hotspurs was Reds best win of this season. He scored the goal for the second straight week and eventually led his side to register a 3-2 victory at the Barclays English Premier League this Sunday.

Liverpool showed their class in the start after Luis Suarez extended his lead and took his side 1-0 up. However, closing time of the opening half, Vertonghen managed to equalise the score for Spurs.

In the second half, Vertonghen showed his class again and took the visitors take a commanding position at Anfield. However, the tides changed when Downing took advantage of Spurs’ keeper Lloris’ mistake. He capitalised and scored a beautiful goal, levelling the reds in the 66^th minute. Eight minutes to the stoppage time, Liverpool got the breakthrough when they were awarded a penalty. Reds’ captain Steven Gerrard netted the ball in sealed the victory.

The England International was quoted in an interview to the Liverpoolfc.com:

“Earlier in the season we would probably have lost the game. But great credit to the lads, we kept going and the fans were right behind us. I’d say it was probably one of the best wins of the season.”

Downing goal however could’ve been cleared easily. He had an option to pass it to Daniel Sturridge but he opted to score for himself. The winger reflected:

“I did think of chipping at first but if you put your foot through it, the worst that can come is they clear it. I’m sure Daniel wouldn’t have been happy if I didn’t score. But I was in the position and lucky for me, it went in. I’m full of confidence, even without the goals. Playing in a good team and playing well gives confidence.”

Liverpool will next face Southampton on 16^th March.
