ANP candidate, his 6-year son shot dead in Karachi

Unidentified gunmen Friday shot dead a National Assembly candidate of the Awami National Party and his six-year old son in Karachi, police and ANP leaders said.

 

Sadiq Zaman Khattak, came under attack as he came out of mosque after Friday prayers, at Bilal Colony in Korangi area.

 

The gunmen, riding a motorcycle, fled after the attack, witnesses said.

 

ANP leader, Bashir Jan has confirmed the incident. Jan himself survived assassination attack in Karachi few days ago.

 

Police said that five people, including two guards of the slain ANP candidate, were injured.

 

Khattak’s six-year old son Aiman Khattak died of wounds in hospital. Sources said that his another son was also injured.

 

Witnesses said that the gunmen had been waiting outside the mosque and opened fire on him as he emerged from the mosque.

 

No group claimed responsibility. However, the Taliban had threatened attacks on the ANP, Pakistan Peoples Party and the Mutahida Qaumi Movement for pursuing secular doctrine and their support for security forcesā€™ operations against theĀ militants.

 

It is the third candidate to be killed during election campaign. Two provincial assembly candidates were killed in Sindh and Balochistan.

 

Hundreds of troops were deployed in Karachi on Friday for election security.
