China has welcomed President Asif Ali Zardari’s visit to India saying better relationships between the two nuclear-armed neighboring states will bring regional stability and prosperity.

According to Chinese media, Beijing is closely observing the trip because it has significances on its own interests involving terrorism and the Siachen glacier that touches Karakoram Highway connecting China with Pakistan.

Xinhua, the State-run news agency run a blunt analysis explaining how better relations between India and Pakistan would serve China.

According to the commentary, the better ties will help bring down military expenditure by the two countries and help China’s modernization drive. In the next phase, the focus would shift to business, it added.

The commentary observed, “Peaceful coexistence between the two countries is indispensable for regional stability, which is vital for regional prosperity and China’s modernization drive. Efforts towards improvement in India-Pakistan ties certainly are welcomed and applauded by the international community including China”.

It is vital to mention here that China, the longstanding friend, dropped its support for Pakistan’s anti-terrorism efforts.

Without naming Pakistan, Beijing blamed that six terrorists operating in western China have been trained in a ‘South Asian country’.

The latest development leaves Pakistan in a vulnerable situation because it was counting on China after its recent clashes with the United States.

The commentary said this was the second time in one year that President Asif Ali Zardari used the cover of religious visit to push for political diplomacy.

Earlier, he wished he want to pray at a mosque in the Chinese city of Urumqi along with his son and two daughter in August 2011 after local leaders blamed Pakistan as the source of terrorists causing bloodshed in the border province of Xinjiang.

It added, “China wants to further boost ties with both countries, and is happy to witness continuous improvement of the Pakistan-India ties”.

According to the analysis, the two neighboring countries have fought three wars engaged in a tit-for-tat nuclear test race in 1998.

Although there was no clear evidence that China backed Pakistan’s bomb program, Beijing has planned and erected nuclear power plants in Pakistan.
