Jamaat-e-Islami refuses to join PML-N’s agitation-movement

In what appeared to be another blow to the opposition party, Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) has given cold shoulder to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that has been striving to muster support for a mass agitation against the PPP-led government.

Earlier, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) also refused to join hands with Nawaz Sharif until the PML-N tender their resignations from the federal and provincial governments.

In response to the PTI’s Nawaz Sharif’s offer, Imran Khan, the PTI chairman, said that before entering into any negotiations his party would want PML-N to quit the parliament.

Following the apex court convicted Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani in contempt case; the PML-N leadership had announced that it will be approaching other parties to build pressure on the government.

It is vital to mention here that both PTI and JI boycotted the 2008 elections and have no presence in parliament.

As compared to the PTI, Jamaat-e-Islami had even harsher pre-conditions and it conveyed to PML-N that before moving further lets have an agreement to first get rid of President Asif Ali Zardari and quit the assemblies, which is a harsher pre-condition for Nawaz Sharif.

Secretary General JI Liaquat Baloch observed, “Yes different parties including PML-N have contacted us. These talks are at very initial stage. No common agenda has been reached so far with any of these parties”.

He added, “We want talks on some minimum common ground. It should be to get rid of rulers. For transparent and free and fair elections are not possible while Zardari is sitting in Presidency”.

Baloch stated that at least President Zardari should be confined to his constitutional role, as President and barred from his role as Co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP).

The JI Secretary General confirmed his party is in contact with Imran Khan and the option of the revival of MMA (Muttahida Majlis Amal), adding that his party was leaving no stone unturned and things will finalize near the election days.

He commented, “We are trying to reach out to opposition parties as well as parties in the ruling alliance. We have also softened our stance to accommodate other parties’ point of view to forge alliances”.
