Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn says Michael Schumacher will continue beyond 2012

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn believes Michael Schumacher will continue racing beyond 2012 when his contract expires while admitting if the team can achieve its goals this year.

Schumacher’s stay in the sport has formed into a debate and some believe including one of the Mercedes member of board of Directors that he will leave the sport at the end of his contract.

Brawn believes that the team has let down the German and not been able to provide Schumacher with the team effort required for him to do well in the season.

Schumacher is in his third season since his comeback and has not been able to perform as well as was expected by his fans. The German is known for building teams into winners and has proved this through his years in the sport.

Critics say that Schumacher’s career is at its end and will not be able to conjure up another win.

“We need to analyse the start of the season very carefully,” Brawn is quoted by Sport Bild. “We have not reached our goals with Michael. It was not about the car and Michael being too slow; it’s just been a few unfortunate circumstances coming together.”

Brawn also said that despite everything the final decision is still Schumacher’s and the management will support any decision he takes.

If Schumacher does decide to retire there are going to be a handful of drivers out of contractual agreements with their respective teams at the end of 2012.

“If we achieve our goals together with him, he like us will probably be interested in going on … If we all feel that it is right to continue, it will happen. We have no real plan B, although one or two people have asked us about our situation for 2013,” Brawn added.

He also mentioned that the team is not thinking of any replacements at the moment. After the Barcelona accident the German was very unhappy but the qualifiers in Monaco made him happy and that is how things are right now the positives are outweighing the negativities.

The pole position at Monaco proved that he is still very much capable and will keep on going until he decides it is time to end his career.
