Sarabjit Singh converted to Islam; claims Surjeet Singh

Surjeet Singh, who was recently released by Pakistan after almost three decades, claimed that Sarabjit Singh was converted to Islam and his Islamic name is Sarfraz, Indian media reported on Friday.

Talking to Indian media in Amritsar, Surjeet Singh said Sarabjit Singh along with another prisoner namely Kirpal Singh had been converted to Islam in order to gain the benefits. They are named as Sarfraz and Mohammad Din in the jail, he added.

He also clarified that Sarabjit Singh was a terrorist and terrorists should not be released neither by India nor Pakistan. He told that all Indian prisoners are kept well in Pakistani jails but Sarabjit Singh’s release is a complicated matter.

Surjeet Singh, who had been arrested by Pakistani police on charges of spying during the regime of General Ziaul Haq, was recently released from Kot Lakhpat Jail.

However, Dalbeer Kore, the sister of Sarabjit Singh denied the claim saying that her brother was still Sikh and reads Sikh religious books in the prison cell.

She, however, added that she saw people calling Kirpal Singh with the name of Din Mohammad when she visited her brother in Lahore jail.

She asserted, “This is not true at all. Sarabjit was a Gursikh, is a Gursikh and will remain a Gursikh. He has kept photos of Sikh gurus in jail and a Sikh religious book. He regularly recites from that book”.

She further said that her brother had been addressed as Sarabjit or Manjit when she had last visited to Pakistan.

Sarabjit Singh is currently jailed in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat prison and has been sentenced to death for his alleged role in 1990 bomb blasts.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Pakistani and Indian media reported that President Asif Ali Zardari converted the death sentence of Sarabjit Singh into life imprisonment and ordered immediate release.

However, presidential spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar clarified that it was not Sarabjit Singh but another Indian prisoner, Surjeet Singh, who had been arrested for spying charges.
