Pakistani, Indian premiers meet during SAARC summit

Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar asserted that talks between premiers of India and Pakistan has imparted a “seriousness of purpose” and will help in strengthening the bond between cross-border arch-rivals.

Both countries have agreed to finalise a calendar of meetings in a bid to resolve all outstanding issues between the countries and develop a congenial environment for the business communities of either side.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan named India as its Most Favoured Nation earlier in the week, opening trade for almost all commodities from India. Matters between both countries had worsened post the infamous 26/11 Mumbai attacks and the Indian media
believes that eradicating the trust deficit is not an easy procedure.

Khar stated that Pakistan has evaluated the talks and has welcomed India’s stance on the situation. India has repeatedly linked terrorism to Pakistan, but the government is still pledging India for an improvement in the current scenario.

Khar furthered that the subsequent talks will be based on all issues which have hampered relations between the neighbouring countries, including the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Showing desperation, Khar stated that Interior Minister Rehman Malik is prepared to visit New Delhi and is awaiting dates for the visit from India. Pakistan has not received a positive response from India, even after years of co-operation, but it still remains
to be seen if there is any hope this time.

India, on the contrary, has shown no interest in sending its ministers or delegates to Pakistan, a signal that talks might take a few more years to produce positive results. Pakistan’s stance in these circumstances is not only disappointing, but alarming
as well.

The need is reciprocal for both countries and thus there is no need to show extreme anxiety for the betterment of ties. Dignity should not be compromised and this is one area which the authorities should keep in mind.
