Pakistan, Afghanistan for joint peace efforts
Pakistan on Wednesday said it had not hidden agenda in Afghanistan and aimed at enhancing bilateral goodwill and all-round cooperation between the two brotherly states.
After a leaked-out NATO report that accused Islamabad of secretly supporting Taliban in Afghanistan, top level talks held in Kabul between top Pakistani officials with their Afghan counterparts.
Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar paid her first visit to Kabul since taking office last year, observing they had no secret schema in Afghanistan. She met with President Hamid Karzai to discuss the ongoing peace process and threat posed to the neighbouring countries in the war on terrorism.
A joint statement issued by the Afghan presidency said that the two leaders covered host of issues including measures to further enhance the bilateral relations, the peace process and the threat of militancy the two states are facing in the present scenario.
Hina Rabbbani Khar reiterated Pakistan’s vigorous support for the reconciliation project, led by the Afghan government in the region.
She conveyed to President Karzai an invitation to attend the tripartite summit of Afghanistan-Pakistan and Iran scheduled to be held in mid-February in Islamabad, the statement added. Khar consecrated that Pakistan fully second the Afghanistan peace process.
Karzai observed that Pakistan could play an upbeat role in promoting the peace negotiations, saying insecurity had hampered the development of the duo countries. He further stated that extremism was a sinister conspiracy that had damaged peace in the region, calling for a joint struggle for peace and stability in the region.
The Afghan President called the extremism in the region an injurious plague that stands in the way of development and stability, saying it was imperative for the two countries to eliminate the roots of the problem and take practical steps in ensuring peace and safety.
He said insecurity in the neighboring states had inflicted great harms to the people of the two countries and have held back the two nations from progress. He, however, recognized the effective role that Pakistan can play for the peace process in Afghanistan.
Dr. Zalmai Rasoul, the Afghan Foreign Minister, Jawed Ludin, the Deputy Minister and Umer Daudzai, the Afghan Ambassador in Islamabad were also present in the meeting.
