Which set-top box is the best in the market: Apple TV or Roku LT

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012 1:39:03 by

Home entertainment has taken a big lead in the last three years especially with the compatibility of televisions with internet. Apple, Inc. was the first to take advantage of the growing market. In the wake of this exponentially growing segment and the interest developing in internet content has encouraged the internet-based companies to provide more applications and content to the users.

In addition to content providers, there are many companies that are surging into the internet content on television business. Google and Roku are some of the examples to quote in this regard.

However, Apple remains in the lead, given the company started the concept in the first place. On the flip side, Google and Roku are going places with their state-of-the-art set-top boxes and cheap price tags attached to them.

At the moment there are two main contenders in the market, Apple TV and Roku LT. LT’s strong suit is the cost that the user has to pay for virtually endless content on the box. On the other hand, Apple has incorporated iOS, the mobile operating system found in iPhones and iPads, into their set-top box and its compatibility with other iOS devices and a dedicated remote control only takes it to another level in the competition.

As far as the content on the internet is concerned, the Roku is leap ahead of its direct competitor. Not only the small box has applications like Netflix and Hulu assembled into the device, there are other bunch of apps that range from television channels to web browsing to online music websites.

The Apple TV lags behind in this category with only iTunes and handful of other applications available for use. However, the iTunes takes the punch harder than expected with the vast database of music and television/movies on a single platform.

In terms of interface, though Roku adorns an easy-to-use and fast interface, the iOS in Apple TV takes the lead with attractive and fluent interface and operating system. In a nutshell, the Apple TV is a winner of race but when it comes to price.

The small Roku is $50 cheaper than Apple TV with almost all the ports and supports for the device to be attached to modern 3D TV and old tube televisions.

    Dear Mr. Hameed,
Both Roku LT and Apple TV might not be available off the shelves in Pakistan but you can order one of them online and there is Raffles Computers in Gulberg Lahore, who deal in Apple products. Apple TV will cost you in the tune of some Rs. 9,000 and Roku will be priced at Rs. 8000. However, Roku can be connected to older CRT televisions as well. Moreover, you need a broadband connection to avail these devices in the fullest.
    Regards,
    Usman.

    Dear Noman,
First of all its not the Android box, its the Chromebox. Also, it will not be available on shelves in Pakistan. You will have to order it online. Best Buy, Cnet and others deal in its sales.
    Regards,
    Usman.
