Sony releases its new ultrabook, Vaio Z – Part 2

The docking station also includes an optical drive that is upgradable to Blu-Ray player, another option that is neither present in the likes of other ultrabooks nor in Macbook Air.

The dock included increases the value of the device but it also takes the notebook out of the plan of those who live around a limited budget. For the base model, only executives like CEOs might be willing to pay 1600 odd dollars to show off.

The device can be upgraded from operating system to the its CPU although the docking station serves all the purposes. But if the user wants to get a hold on extra juice, Sony welcomes any kind of upgrades. The operating system can be upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional for $50, a Blu-ray drive in the external dock for $50, and the extra sheet battery for $150. You can also upgrade the CPU to an Intel Core i7-2640M ($250), and trade up the SSD from 128GB to 256GB ($200) or even 512GB ($1,100). Adding a Verizon/AT&T/Sprint 3G antenna costs $50; a Verizon 4G antenna is $150. It’s rare outside of gaming machines to find a high-end 13-inch laptop with this many configuration options, so the flexibility is appreciated. The display can be upgraded from 1,600×900 pixels to 1,920×1,080-pixel, remaining in the same 13-inch constraints.

Although Vaio Z did not pass the performance tests in flying colours—without the docking station—but keeping the ultrabook moniker in mind, it definitely put up a great show.

Though the 2012 model is relatively cheaper than the 2011 version, it is still priced at top dollar for those who earn the big buck. However, the shape and specs all give it the support on the money front.
