Intel’s third-gen Ivy Bridge processors: What effect do they have on Pakistani market? – Part 1

It has been more than a month since the release of Intel Corporation’s new Ivy Bridge processors and a number of laptops and desktops have been rolled out by the likes of Asus, Acer and Lenovo. The semi-conductor company’s strategy however, has changed this year. They released the top-end quad-core Core i7 processors first with the mid-range dual core Core i7 and Core i5 and i3 following later in summers.

Most of what has followed the release of these high-end processors are gaming laptops and professional desktops, Asus also released an All-in-one desktop in May. These computers are of great importance to gamers and for those who work with graphics for a living. Pakistani market is very much into the thick of all this. There are gaming enthusiasts and a slew of graphics companies that might be able to milk this opportunity.

Gaming aside, these laptops and desktops are of eminence to the general public for a number of reasons. Not only in Pakistan but all over the world, economy—both macro and micro—is on Achilles ’ heel. There is a need for budget electronics in the world as it had never been in the past. Though the prices of computers and mobile devices have dropped dramatically, if we take into account the period of last one decade, now are desperate times. If a high-end computer device in the past had a price tag of 150 Lac rupees, now it is all yours within 50 to 70 thousand bucks.

The good thing about the new Ivy Bridge laptops and desktops is that they bring the prices down even more. Intel claims that the new series of processors are more efficient and are cost effective at the same time.

The prices of Core i7 quad-core processors might have not been down that much but the efficiency has improved to an extent that now a Core i5 quad-core CPU can do the same work that last year’s Sandy Bridge Core i7 quad-core could do.
