Acer releases new Iconia A700 tablet with Retina-like display – Part 1

Acer, Inc. released a new tablet this week called Acer Iconia A700. Along with a fast processor, the new tablet has another new feature, a pumped up new screen resolution that nearly matches the Retina Display found in the third-generation iPad from Apple.

Though design-wise the new tablet is not very different from other models released by Acer, the screen makes all the difference, especially when you bring the price into the equation. At $449 the new tablet is a good bargain compared to the new iPad that starts at $499 for the 16 GB version.

The new A700 comes pre-installed with Google’s new operating system, Ice Cream Sandwich. However, the company has also installed some customized new applications to the device that are similar to ones found in A200 and A 510.

Overall, the new device is a major upgrade to the A510 with the new screen installed. Android-users will love to have a sharp screen that breaks to 1280×800-pixel barrier. To date, only Toshiba Excite 13 has reached a higher resolution in Android market with 1600×900 pixels.

Design

The new tablet is quite familiar to A510 in terms of design. In fact, it has almost the same structure and outlook that A510 came with a few months ago.

Though the front gives a solid metallic feel, the back has a plastic and rubber finish that in a good way gives the user a firm grip while holding for longer periods of time, like reading a book. The rubber finish does not make the build quality poor at the least bit but the grip reduces the probability of the device slipping through the hands at often times. Therefore, the overall finish is more likely better than the rest of the competition that dwell on metallic or plastic finish to give elegance to their respective devices.
