Microsoft released the new version of its mobile operating system, Windows Phone 8 on Tuesday, June 20. The new operating system is of imperial importance to the Windows-makers in the smartphone industry.

The company’s latest contracts with Nokia, Samsung and HTC have earned it a great deal of recognition in the phone market but still the crown goes to the likes of iOS and Android. The new version is the company’s attempt to create a ripple in smartphone market in general and Windows market segment in particular.

So far Windows phones have been on shorter side of the stick in terms of specifications. Though it was Microsoft’s claim that Windows Phone does not need dual-core and quad-core processor but the technology is evolving rapidly and MS is helpless to keep the new line of processors at bay.

The new Windows Phone will be compatible to a number of new features but the biggest of them are the new home screen outlook and the near-field communication capabilities. The latter has been selling like hot cakes in the market though its productivity is limited to only a number of functions, like Beam and electronic payment.

The new version will be pre-installed in all the new handsets that will be released come Fall. However, the bad news is that there is no support for upgrade to the WP8 from 7.5 Mango. This might not bode well for the existing Windows Phone users who just bought a Lumia and Focus 2.

However, what Microsoft has done to address the issue is a release of Windows Phone 7.8, upgradable from 7.5 Mango. The new version will include a range of WP8 apps that could be used on older handsets. Moreover, the new version will also have the WP8 look-like home screen.
