Surjeet Singh confesses he came to Pakistan for spying purposes

Thursday, June 28th, 2012 12:39:42 by

Just minutes after he crossed the Wagah border into India, Surjeet Singh, who was released by Pakistan on Thursday almost after three decades, confessed his crime saying that he came to the country for spying.

It is vital to mention here that Indian spy Surjeet Singh was freed from Kot Lakhpat jail after serving his life-term for 27 years.

Speaking to the Indian media, Surjeet Singh urged the two neighboring countries to release each others’ prisoners. He, however, confessed, “I went to Pakistan for spying”.

He said, “India should release Pakistani prisoners and Pakistan should release Indian prisoners, it is all I want to say”. Replying to a query, the Indian spy said that would not want to come back to Pakistan in the future.

He clarified, “I was accused of being a spy. If I come back, agencies will have doubts that I am here to spy again, that is why I will not come back”.

Expressing his pleasures for Pakistan, he said that he spent pleasant time while being imprisoned in the country but kept on missing his family members.

Replying to a query about Sarabjit Singh’s condition, Surjeet Singh informed the media that he was in good health and that he was normal. He further said he was used to meet him after every other week and he roams freely in the jail.

The released Indian spy dispelled the rumors of ill-treatment, saying no Indian prisoners were in bad condition in the prisons and nobody was dying of sickness or hunger.

Surjeet Singh added that those who the doctors are unable to cure are sent to a hospital for proper treatment. He explained, “There is a Jinnah Hospital there like we have the Chandigarh Hospital here. They send the sick prisoners there who are brought back after treatment”.

Commenting about mistaken identities, Surjeet defended Pakistan saying that it was an honest mistake as there is little difference in the way Sarabjit and Surjeet are written in Urdu.

Surjeet was arrested near the border with India on charges of spying during the era of military ruler Zia-ul-Haq. Later in 1985, he was given death sentence under Pakistan Army Act.

However, president Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the advice of then premier Benazir Bhutto changed the death commuted the death sentence into life imprisonment in 1989.

Truly misleading.. Not at all fair to provide such a wrong info to the world.. More importantly it hurts a person who undergone punishment in imprisoned for around 3 decades.. very shameful..

  4. Dear Arun, what you mentioned in the previous comment was not right. He gave remarks in different perspective. At one place he confessed he came to Pakistan for spying while replying to another question he said he was accused of spying charges. BTW, he gave these comments to Indian media not Pakistani journalists.

Hi Faisal, I commented because I read article and did not find his statement where he confessed but headline was claiming so.
Anyway, now it seems what you mentioned is right as I read same on other sites as well that he confessed and then press conference ended abruptly.
I think both India and Pak should not do such things and focus on internal problem.

It is time to release prisoners who completed their sentence on both sides. Even a spy what left in his life after 20-30 years. Keeping them in Jail for prolonged time is inhuman than hanging them at the first instance.

No Khuran, Bible, Bhagavad Geeta or even GOD forgive to those leaders who denying the life of people who realised their mistake and completed their sentence.

Both our country have curse of dynasty politics and filthy leaders, that is the biggest problem creating unity among even citizen.

It appears Pakistan authorities let him grow his beard in last twelve months. When Kashmir Singh was freed his beard was only a week old.
