In what appeared to be a rare development, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan urged the Supreme Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of Shia killings across the country.

He condemned the killings of Shia while addressing a joint press conference while sitting with prominent leader of Sunnat Wal Jamaat Maulana Khalil and Shia leader Sheikh Jaffery.

The cricket-turned-politician asked Chief Justice Chaudhry to take notice of the widespread incidents, particularly in Gilgit and Balochistan.

He declared the Babusar killings as terrible tragedy, saying that the ruling PPP government had completely failed in controlling law and order situation in the country.

It is vital to mention here that Taliban militants killed at least 21 innocent Shia Muslims while pulling them off from the buses at Babusar Top when they were in way to Gilgit from Rawalpindi.

He said, “Why the chief justice was taking suo motu notices of relatively trivial matters but not taking action against sectarian killings. It was good that the chief justice had taken notice of the incumbent government’s failures but it also needed to give special consideration to the issue of brutal Shia killings”.

Such a demand came first time from Imran Khan who is considered right winger. In order to promote sectarian and religious harmony in the region, the PTI chief during his visit to Skardu held sittings with leaders of different sects.

He noted, “Killing of all innocent people is against the spirit of Islam. The loss of this essence of Faith is visible in the brutal killing of Shia Muslim”.

The former captain pledged the masses that his party will continue raising its voice against militant organizations that were making efforts to create a conflict through sectarian violence.

He was of the opinion that all the Ulema of different school of thoughts agreed there was a deliberate effort to create Shia-Sunni conflict as part of a conspiracy against Islam.

According to the reports, some Shia Muslims have been killed in the ongoing sectarian strife across the country within the last twelve months.
