ECP can call army for free and fair elections: CEC Fakhruddin G Ebrahim

Friday, September 28th, 2012 11:19:05 by

Terming the free and fair elections only solution of all problems, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Fakhruddin G Ebrahim has said that holding free, fair and transparent polls in the country was the one point agenda of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

While speaking to the media after holding a meeting with political parties, Fakhruddin said that the ECP could deploy the army personnel at polling stations to make the entire process transparent.

He observed, “Political parties have given some good suggestions on holding of the elections, adding Balochistan needs special attention. Pakistan’s future hinges on transparent polls, so no compromise will be made towards holding free and fair elections.”

The CEC continued that the political parties should be realized that it would be risky for the country if they didn’t ensure the fair elections.

In his view, political forces along with civil society should have to work jointly and support each other to ensure smooth transition of power from one civilian government to other.

While answering to a question, he stated the ECP would enhance the number of polling stations in the country to 90,000 which was 70,000 last time to facilitate the people. It is also working to develop a model polling station, he added.

Fakhruddin was of the opinion that the change in the country was possible just through the vote of people.

He noted, “Credible elections are key to Pakistan’s future existence and it is the last mission of my life to hold free elections. Please don’t let me fail in this mission.

Earlier, the election commission had called a meeting of 15 mainstream political parties to take them on board over the commission’s preparations for the next general election – due early next year.

A leader of JUI-F while referring to the intelligence agencies said, “You have invited us all for consultative meeting. But, one party is missing. They are the real party who has the final say in the making and breaking of election results,”

In reply to this, the CEC said that they would also call them for consultation.
